How it is calculated
Value with no costs = amount x (1 + yearly return)^years.
The load comes off the amount first. The expense ratio comes off the return each year.
Value with costs = (amount - load) x (1 + yearly return - expense ratio)^years.
What costs take out = value with no costs - value with costs. Each figure is rounded to the paisa once.
Assumptions
- A return of 12% a year before costs and an expense ratio of 2% a year, so the money grows at the difference.
- A front-end load of 1.5% comes off the amount at the start.
- The return and the costs are the same every year. Real ones change.
- No back-end load, tax or other charge is taken off.
