How it is calculated

Each month's amount goes in at the start of the month. The yearly return is split into twelve equal monthly steps, i = yearly return / 12, and n is the number of months.

What you have saved grows to saved x (1 + i)^n.

The monthly amount C is the one that makes saved x (1 + i)^n + C x ((1 + i)^n - 1) / i x (1 + i) equal the goal.

At a return of 0 the monthly amount is (goal - saved) / n.

The monthly amount is rounded UP to the paisa, so the goal is never a paisa short.

Assumptions

  • The amount goes in at the start of every month, for the whole period.
  • The return of 8% a year is added at the end of each month (monthly compounding).
  • The return is the same every year. Real returns go up and down.
  • No fees, charges or tax are taken off.
